Nikolai Tolsty is an artist who thoughtfully joins forces with Mother Nature to produce paper animal silhouettes. He use paper as his medium. Nikolai carves out an animal silhouette on each paper and then use the natural setting around him to photograph the respective cut out.
Paper-cutting as an art has been practiced since the 6th century in China but it was only around the 16th or probably 17th century, when this craft reached Europe and other parts of the world. While this may seem current, don’t forget that paper manufacture only started in Europe in the 10th century!
